The Tata Nano came to be known as the world’s cheapest car, or the “one-lakh car", produced for the Indian market and targeting the upcoming middle class of the developing nation. The car symbolizes the ambitions of the Indian society and the potential of the Indian industry. However, as many parts of the Nano are actually produced abroad, the role of the car promoting the national industry, was called into question.
Launched in 2011, its development began in 2003. In order to achieve the lowest cost possible, Tata Motors reduced the features of the vehicle to the essential necessities. The Italian Institute of Development in Automotive Engineering signs responsible for the Nano’s design, which incorporates many elements to save costs. Some of these are: only one window wiper, no rear door, no radio equipment, no airbags and no air conditioning as standard.
