won the Mille Miglia in 1940 overall, and it is entering 12 of the cars into the 2012 Mille Miglia. The entries will be a mix of racing versions and production versions.
The most famous car in the lineup is the 328 Touring Coupé that won the race in 1940. The car will be driven by Dr. Herbert Diess who is a member of the board for BMW in charge of development.
“The BMW 328 set benchmarks for lightweight construction and vehicle aerodynamics. This car laid the foundation stone for our success today in this area,” said Diess.
Other important 328 variations entering the race are the 328 Kamm Coupé, 328 Frazer Nash and 328 Berlin-Rom Touring Roadster.
Head of Design at BMW Adrian van Hooydonk will also be driving one of the cars.
The 328 was built from 1936 to 1940. The car was groundbreaking for its time by using a tubular space frame with aluminum body and engine with hemispherical combustion chambers. The production version used a 2.0l, inline six engine with 79hp from three Solex carburetors.
The cars won the 1939 RAC rally, won their class in the 1939 24 Hours of Le Mans and took a class win in the 1938 Mille Miglia.
