As auto enthusiasts we pay a lot of attention to racing, and our ears always perk up when a car is marketed as a racecar for the street. But racing is not the only kind of automotive fun to be had. Out in the country, there are plenty of guys who have fun playing in the dirt driving there trucks and a few cars over boulders and through forests. There are comparitively tons of track-ready cars compared to the number of trucks out there ready to take on going fast over off-road, broken terrain.
Ford entered the fray into this market last year with its SVT Raptor based on the F-150 pick-up truck. The truck is meant to be a truck that the buyer could enter into the Baja 1000, or similar race, right off the showroom floor. It is powered by a 6.2 liter V8 with 411hp.
For 2012, Ford is adding even more off-road features. It is getting a Torsen front-differential that increaes front-wheel grip. The other new feature is an optional front mounted camera to get a better idea of what the front wheels are doing when going over obstacles. The image is displayed on the 8in. screen located on the dashboard. The system can only be ordered with the navigation system and can only be activated below 15mph.
The 2012 Raptor gets a few other, smaller upgrades as well. There is a new body graphic, blue interior trim option and Race Red exterior. It also offers new, optional cooled seats.
Ford did not say if the new standard features mean that the Raptor's price will also increase this year.
