Aston Martin has been has been working with Italian coachbuilder Zagato since 1960. While the first car came in 1960, the majority of the Zagato-bodied Aston Martins have come in the last decade.
The original Aston Martin Zagato was the DB4 GT Zagato with 314hp and a 280km/h top speed. Just 19 of these cars were made, and all of them still exist today. Aston Martin claims that these cars have a value on the current market of $6 million.
It took a full 25 years for the next Aston Martin Zagato to come to the world. The V8 Vantage Zagato came in 1985, and its drop top sibling the V8 Volante Zagato came in 1986. These cars have extremely polarizing styling. Their design is almost Japanese with clean, straight lines and an open greenhouse. Aston Martin made 50 Vantage Zagatos and 33 Volante Zagatos. It has a 5.3 liter V8 with 430hp and a 300km/h top speed.
The DB7 V12 Zagato and DB-AR1 came in 2002 and 2003 respectively. These cars went back to much more traditional styling that is almost retro. They have big, forward grills and swooping lines. Aston Martin made 99 of each car for sale and one each for its own museum. The DB7 was a coupe, and the AR1 was a convertible although technically it had no top. It was always open.
Finally, there is the new V12 Zagato that we have covered extensively on Autoviva. Its design is similar to the previous V12 Zagato but with more queues from the original DB4 GT Zagato. Aston Martin will make no more than 150 of the new car.
Looking into the past, one has to be curious if there are plans for an open top version of the current V12 Zagato.
