“Today marks a milestone in the history of the BMW Group, as we hand over our first BMW i premium electric vehicle to customers. In doing so, we are bringing sustainable mobility to the roads,” said Ian Robertson, head of BMW sales and marketing.
The i3 is available from 46, specifically chosen dealers in Germany, and BMW is taking the innovative step of letting customers order the i3 directly online or over the phone. The service is only available in Germany at the moment but will broaden to other markets where it is allowed.
While the first cars are all going to individual customers, BMW is also attempting to find fleets that want to use the electric car. It has already sold some cars to Allianz SE for its vehicle fleet and is working with other German businesses to sell the cars as well.
The i3 combines a carbon fiber reinforced plastic body with an electric motor capable of a range up to 190km (118 miles). Later, it will also add a small internal combustion engine as a range extender for customers that need an even longer range.
Prices for the i3 in Germany start at €34,950. It is BMW’s least expensive electrified car but is still priced on par with a well optioned 3 SeriesBMW BMW 3 Series Gen.6 [F30/F31]Germany, 2012 > present115 versions
