over 100,000 miles on public roads.
GM created its 119-car Project Driveway fleet in 2007 to test fuel cell vehicles in public. In that time, the fleet as driven a cumulative 3 million miles. It has the most fuel cell vehicles registered in the United States.
The fuel cell Equinox was first sent to the Walt Disney Company studio in Burbank, California, and since then 10 GM engineers have traded it to use it as the daily vehicle.
“The Fuel Cell Equinox is an attention-getter everywhere I go. The people who ask me about it are very enthusiastic about the technology,” said Todd Goldstein, the engineer who was driving it when it turned over 100,000 miles.
GM and Honda started a long-term collaboration in July to develop next generation fuel cells and hydrogen storage technology. Their goal is to have the technology ready for 2020.
“We believe hydrogen fuel cell technology holds tremendous potential to one day help reduce our dependence on petroleum,” said Charlie Freese, executive director of GM’s global fuel cell engineering activities.
