Chrysler Investing $20 Million in Ohio Factory for 9-Speed Automatic

has announced that it is investing $19.6 million into its Toledo, Ohio, factory to build parts for its new nine-speed automatic transmission. The new transmission will debut in the new Jeep CherokeeCherokee Gen.3 [KL]Jeep Cherokee Gen.3 [KL]United States of America, 2014 > present18 versions

that will also be built at the Toledo factory. 

The factory will only be building the torque converters for the new transmission, and the rest will be built at Chrysler's transmission factory in Indiana. 

Production of both the torque converters and new Cherokee will begin in the third quarter of the year. It will also produce torque converters for Chrysler's eight-speed automatics. 

After the new Cherokee, the nine-speed automatic will be introduced to the Dodge DartDart (modern)Dodge Dart (modern)United States of America, 2012 > present26 versions

“The new nine-speed transmission is a critical part of our strategy to meet fuel economy requirements over the next several years and Toledo Machining will play an integral role in bringing this transmission to market,” said Scott Garberding, Senior Vice President of Manufacturing at Chrysler.
