The Corvette is known as a performance icon, but it has not always been on the cutting edge of technology. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Chevrolet is revealing a new option for the Corvette – the Performance Data Recorder. It integrates high-definition video, audio and telemetry to review and be shared.
The technology uses Cosworth’s Toolbox telemetry software to provide drivers with g-force, speed, rpm and lap time data. It will be available as an option on 2015 model year Corvettes that will be on sale in the third quarter of 2014. Pricing has not yet been announced.
“The Performance Data Recorder combines the ability to record and share drive videos with the power of a professional-level motorsports telemetry system,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer.
The PDR records 720p video from the windshield header trim and records audio from a microphone mounted in the cabin. The telemetry uses a GPS receiver to record data five times per second and accesses vehicle information like gear selected, braking force, steering angle and more. There is an SD-card slot in the glove box for later review. Depending on the card’s size, it can record up to 800 minutes of driving. The driver can also watch replays on the Corvette’s 8in infotainment screen.
The driver can select how much data appears on the video ranging from pure video to speed, rpm, g-force, a location-based map and lap time. After multiple laps, the system even saves cornering lines and speed so drivers can see how changes to their driving line affects lap times.
The two videos below show what the system looks like in action.
