is continuing its “Cross” family of concept cars with the CrossBlue Coupe at the Shanghai Auto Show. The latest version is a plug-in hybrid crossover that can cover 33km of pure electric driving.

“The disproportionately high growth in the SUV segment gives us designers the opportunity to implement an even stronger diversification of models. In the CrossBlue Coupé we are showing the potential of our Volkswagen design DNA. This concept vehicle will undoubtedly have an influence on future SUV models,” said Volkswagen Brand Head of Design Klaus Bischoff.

The CrossBlue Coupe is designed to combine ruggedness and sportiness into a combined package. Its front end emphasizes he cars width with many horizontal lines. The side shows the concept’s long hood, gently curving roof and integrated spoiler. There is a crease that runs from the through the doors to the taillights of the car. As is the current style, it has a relatively thin A-pillar and a thick C-pillar. The rear includes three-dimensional LED headlights and tailpipes integrated into the rear bumper.

Inside, the CrossBlue Coupe seats five in comfort. The concept includes things like Nappa leather seats and aluminum trim that will probably not make it to the production version. It also has a 12.3in infotainment screen and 10.1in center info display.

Power comes from a turbocharged V6 with a six-speed automatic and a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a total of 409hp that will accelerate to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds with a top speed of 236km/h. Despite the power and speed, it will use 3.0l/100km (78mpg US) and gives a total range of 1,190km (739.4 miles). The pure electric mode is meant to be used in the city to eliminate emissions. It works at up to 120km/h (75mph).

The latest in the Cross family uses VW’s MQB platform and could use conventional engines for the production version.

As VW continues to show crossover concepts with styling similar to the CrossBlue Coupe, it seems more likely that we will eventually see a production version. The previous concepts have included the CrossBlueCrossBlueVolkswagen CrossBlueGermany, 2014 > 20145 photos
