. With the new Edge, Ford Europe enters a new segment, offering customers a high-end SUV technologically advanced, refined and spacious.
"All-new Edge will deliver more room for passengers than large competitor SUVs that cost considerably more. The styling and suite of comfort, convenience and safety technologies in Edge rival the premium offerings in Europe.” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe.
In visual terms the new Edge features an exterior design in line with other Ford models, with a prominent chrome grille, the thin and chiselled front LED headlamps, and the three-dimensional blade shape rear LED tail lamps. The wheel arches host alloy wheels of 20 inches.
The independent rear suspension and integral link ensures better driving. Ford used high strength steel to create a strong body structure that helps provide greater maneuverability. The interior refinement has also been optimized with the use of acoustic glass and the Edge uses tires that have been specially selected to reduce rolling noise.
In Europe, Ford will offer the Edge with two versions of the 2.0TDCi Duratorq diesel engine. One of these versions has 180hp and 400 Nm of torque and, combined with a manual six-speed transmission, features CO2 emissions of 149 g/km. The other version has 210hp with 450 Nm of torque and CO2 emissions of 159 g/km. This time the engine is combined with an automatic 6-speed PowerShift transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel.
Advanced Technology
The new Edge will have Adaptive Direction, which will make the model easier to maneuver and more fun to drive. It will also introduce in Europe the Active Noise Cancellation technology and Front Split View Camera.
The Adaptive Direction continuously changes the steering ratio depending on vehicle speed, enhancing steering response in all conditions. At low speeds, such as in parking or maneuvering in tight streets, the new system makes the vehicle more streamlined and easy to turn. At higher speeds, as in freeway, it allows the Edge to react more smoothly and precisely to driver commands.
Ford's Active Noise Cancellation system employs three microphones in the cabin and generates opposing sound waves directed through the audio system that improves overall engine sound and cabin ambiance. The Front Split View Camera facilitates maneuvering in difficult intersections and parking spaces with restricted visibility through the use of a system of 180-degree camera installed on the front of the vehicle.
With a setting of four doors and five seats, the new Edge arrives in the market in North America early next year, followed by Europe, South America and Asia Pacific later in 2015.
