has released its 2012 Sustainability Report and announced that energy use is down 7% and carbon emissions are down 5.3% at its factories since 2010 towards a goal of reducing emissions by 20% by 2020. It now has 105 landfill-free factories and waste production is down 8% since 2010; 90% of manufacturing waste worldwide is recycled. The report also promises to reduce the average CO2 emissions of its cars in the US by 15% by 2016.

“Sustainability is not only a key part of how GM is shifting from a good to great company, it is about the leadership and innovation that can transform the auto industry. Our long-term approach to sustainability enables us to increase efficiency and reimagine personal mobility to best meet customer needs and lifestyles,” said GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson.

It also listed further goals in its report including setting 2017 goals for having 500,000 electrified cars sold in the US and doubling the number of cars that it sells that have 40mpg highway fuel economy ratings from six currently to 12. For Europe, it wants to cut vehicle CO2 emissions by 27% by 2020.
