Kia is entering in a new phase of its strategy of green models with the launch of its first hybrid SUV, the
Niro. The unveiling took place at the Chicago Motor Show. The vehicle is part of the South Korean brand strategy to increase to 11 the number of environmentally friendly cars by the end of the decade.
The Kia Niro is the first model that uses the new
Hyundai platform created specifically for hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. In terms of dimensions, the new model stands between the
Kia Soul and
Kia Sportage and has a wheelbase of 2700mm.
The hybrid system of the new Kia Niro consists of a four-cylinder Kappa 1.6-liter petrol engine with 103hp associated with an electric motor of 43hp, which creates a combined output of 146hp and 264Nm of torque. A dual-clutch six-speed gearbox is responsible for sending power to Niro's front axle. Although they are not yet officially confirmed, Kia believes that the CO2 emissions of the hybrid SUV will be 89g/km.
To develop the Niro, Kia paid special attention to make it aerodynamically efficient. The vehicle has a drag coefficient of 0.29. In terms of design the SUV has a wide stance which intends to convey stability and a low center of gravity. With a long wheelbase the vehicle reduced the front and rear overhangs managing to optimize the interior space.
The Kia Niro hits the market in the autumn, but in Europe the arrival is expected only in early 2017.
