“The concept got the thumbs-up and 90 per cent of the 250,000 people we spoke to loved it," said Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern.
McGovern says that he prepared several concepts for the DC100 before selecting the car that toured auto shows this year.
“We need a new Defender for a new generation. so it has to be relevant and desirable to a modern audience, but it has to have the essence of the Defender. James Bond needs to be able to kick the hell out of it and it will still be able to get up for more," he said.
The point of the truck is three-fold. First, it is not possible given modern, European safety regulations to create a car like the current Defender. That meant that McGovern had to create a car that looked capable and modern, while being safe. Second, he needed to keep the Defender's current enthusiasts in mind. They liked the fact that the truck was rugged and that needed to be at least communicated through the design. Finally, the car had to modern like the new Range Rover and Evoque.
