in Europe, where it says that it already has 10,000 preorders. Production began in Japan in August.

The car will go on sale in the Netherlands first, followed by Nordic countries and finally in the rest of Europe. The European car is only changed with tweaked suspension settings and to comply with EU regulations.

It uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with front and rear electric motors with 80hp each. It can run in either series hybrid mode with the engine providing power to the batteries or in parallel mode with the electric motors working with the engine to boost power. Power for the electric motors comes from a 12kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The Outlander PHEV has a maximum range of 824km (512 miles) and a maximum pure EV range of 52km (32 miles). It uses 1.9l/100km and emits 44g/km of CO2.  It takes five hours to charge from a 230v outlet or 30 minutes to quick charge to 80% on the CHAdeMO standard.

The Outlander PHEV is still a useful cargo vehicle with 463 liters of rear cargo capacity and a 1,500kg (3,307lb) towing capacity.

Prices in the Netherlands start at €39,990.
