has entered production in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and the first of them will begin service before the end of the year.

It has taken years for Nissan to reach this point. It built a simulated New York street at its proving grounds and hired real New York City cab drivers to drive pre-production models 155,000 miles in New York for testing.

destined for New York taxi duty get special modifications after production to prepare them for the streets. The trucks have different door windows and a panoramic sunroof that do not come with the standard NV200. They also will all come pre-painted in New York Taxi Yellow. The list of modifications is massive, but highlights include six-way adjustable driver’s seat, navigation, intercom an odor neutralizing headliner, rear lighting, a rear 12v outlet, USB ports and flat floor. The exterior lights automatically flash when the door is open to warn other drivers.

For added safety, the cars get front and rear curtain airbags, seat-mounted airbags for the driver, traction control and stability control.

The engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a 150,000-mile warranty.
