One Liter, Three-Cylinder Ecoboost Will Cut Emissions Below 120g/km of CO2

We have been talking a lot about Ford's future ST-vehicles at Autoviva. They are exciting, new and undoubtedly fun, but they are not what most real buyers are shopping for. People are looking for cars to carry their families as affordably as possible.

Ford knows that, while the Focus ST and Fiesta ST might make buzz, its new petrol, one liter, turbocharged three-cylinder engine is what will sell cars. This new engine is the smallest Ecoboost ever and will be available in the Focus, C-Max and B-Max. The engine is based on the same technology that is available in all of the other Ecoboost engine like direct injection and variable camshaft timing.

Small engines with small turbos are nice because they do not experience the turbo lag that often occurs on larger engines. Ford says that the 120PS variant will make its max torque of 170Nm from 1,300rpm. The engine is also equipped with a smart air conditioner pump and oil pump that loads the engine only when necessary to lower fuel consumption.

The Focus and C-Max will also get start/stop, Ford's Active Grill Shutter and Ford's Smart Regenerative Charging as standard when equipped with the 1.0 liter Ecoboost.

Ford will introduce two versions of the engine next year. One makes 100PS with a five-speed manual transmission. The other makes 120PS with a six-speed manual transmission, and Ford says that after this engine debuts in Europe, it will introduce it to North America and China.

Ford did not release exact consumption or emission for the new engine but promises that it will later this year when the engine becomes available.

I think Ford should invest in clean diesel rather than making 3 cylinders.
