208 is lighter and smaller than the previous generation while being larger inside. Even from the most basic trim the new 208 has a body made from very high strength steel panels, ultra-high strength steel panels and an aluminum energy absorption beam.

i30 also received the top award. It also has a class-leading 90% score in the 'child occupant' safety category with maximum points in the 18-month-old and three-year-old tests.

Euro NCAP found that the i30 provided good protection for the driver and passenger, and the head restraints caused good protection against whiplash.

It also did well in the pedestrian test with maximum points for pedestrian leg protection.
