for an attempt to set the fastest recorded time for a land vehicle to cross from Wadi Adda Wasir, Saudi Arabia, to the United Arab Emirates. The 1,000km trip covers the Empty Quarter, one of the harshest deserts in the world.
"The Range Rover Sport is stock and is running standard tyres. We don't believe a recorded time exists for this challenge. We will not be claiming a "Record" for this activity but hope to post a impressive time which shows the capability of a stock Range Rover Sport," said Dave Roynon, Land Rover product PR manager.
The exact start date for the attempt has not been set yet because of variable weather conditions in the area. Land Rover says that it expects to begin between October 31 and November 3.
The Empty Quarter includes much of the southern portion of the Arab Peninsula. It is the largest sand desert in the world and has average daily high temperatures of 47° C (117° F) and a record high of 56 °C (133 °F). It has sand dunes 850ft high.
The truck is a production specification Range Rover Sport, but the team is bringing safety equipment, extra fuel and spare tires with them. The driver is Moi Torrallardona, a 47 year-old Spanish off-road racer with Dakar Rally experience.
The team plans for the car to finish its run on November 4, and the truck will be on display at the Dubai Motor Show on November 5.
