special editions will cross the auction block at the Historics at Brooklands on September 1. The first car is a Triple White Beetle Convertible that was sold in the US. The other car is La Grande Bug, which was also sold in the US and features high-end trim for the time.
The Triple White Beetle Convertible was Volkswagen's attempt to sell the last run of Beetle Convertible's in the United States in 1979 and 1980. Each dealer was offered the chance to buy either one Triple White or Triple Black Beetle. Volkswagen only built as many as they received dealer orders making them rather rare. As their name indicates, the cars came in all white with a white top, white paint and white interior.
The car being auctioned has just 429 miles on it and was not registered until February 2007. Brooklands expects that the car will sell for between £24,000 and £27,000.
The other special edition car is La Grande Bug, which was another US only special edition. The car was built in 1975 and includes blue leather seats with corduroy inserts, blue carpets, leather steering wheel and rosewood trim. The cars were available in either Ancona Blue or Lime Green.
Being from 1975, this car got some major upgrades over previous Beetle's in the US. Upgrades include Bosch fuel injection, rack and pinion steering and larger turn signals.
This car was never registered in the US or UK and has 242 miles on it. Brooklands expects the car to sell for between £24,000 and £27,000.
The Historics at Brooklands is an independent auction house located in the Brooklands Museum in the UK.
