RM Auctions seems to have quite an interesting auction planned for Monaco on May 11 and 12. Not only is it selling he only Peugeot 908 V12 HDi available to the public, they are offering this oddball Italcorsa/Tarf II Bisiluro.
The car was built by noted race car driver Piero Taruffi and is the second two-pod car that he built. The first was the Italcorsa/Tarf I that had a 50hp, 500cc Moto Guzzi motorcycle engine. Taruffi set six speed records in the car including a then speed record for a 500cc car of 130mph.
Taruffi considered building a three-pod version of the car but instead improved the Tarf into the Tarf II with a 1,720cc Maserati engine with a dual-staged, supercharged engine with 290hp. That is the car that RM is offering. Taruffi moved the driver position to the other side of the car for the Tarf II. Each wheel is independently sprung with a chain running from the engine to the rear to supply power. The fins in the rear on controllable to allow for wind compensation.
The car immediately set records in 1951 by doing 185.49mph in the standing mile and 180.55mph in the standing kilometer.
Taruffi continued to develop the Tarf II by putting a 4.5l Ferrari engine in it in 1957.
The car is currently being sold powered by a Ferrari Dino V6. RM expects the car to sell between €160,000 and €200,000
