built for Sir Stirling Moss has sold for $35 million at auction. The sale was originally reported on high-end car auction site Anamera and confirmed by Bloomberg. That is the highest price ever paid for a car.

Just 39 250 GTOs were built between 1962 and 1964. This car was chassis number 3505GT and was built for Stirling Moss. However, he suffered a crash in 1962 that ended his racing career, and he never raced the car. Innes Ireland drove the car in the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans, but it did not finish.

In February, 2012, a 1964 GTO sold for sold for $32 million.

The car was sold by Dutch businessman Eric Heerema to American Craig McCaw. Heerema profited from the sale immensely because he bought the car for $8.5 million about 10 years ago. McCaw co-founded McCaw Cellular, a telecommunications company, that he sold to AT&T in 1993 for $11.3 billion.
