Tablet PCs: the future of the centre console?

A growing trend in concept vehicles has had me thinking; are fixed centre console controls soon to become a thing of the past, with removable tablet PCs to replace them?

Some of the cars which have headed in this direction include the Rinspeed Bamboo, VW Bulli and Mercedes A-Class Concept. As we can see from images of them, traditional console switches and dials have been largely removed in favour of all-in-one tablet PC solutions like the iPad and HTC tablet.

Adopting a system like this affords numerous benefits in terms of safety, convenience and interactivity over the way we currently control most of our vehicles extra features. One small device can govern all manner of functions such as climate control, multimedia, electronic safety programs, communications, internet connectivity and maybe even ignition. Passengers can be kept entertained infinitely, and the potential for apps could mean an unlimited range of possibilities. For example you may be sitting in traffic and suddenly feel hungry; all you will need to do is dial in a command on your favourite pizza-chain app and you can have you food ordered and paid for in time for your arrival at the drive-through.

The potential to download software or firmware upgrades could do wonders for vehicle safety as well. Instead of having to recall thousands of vehicles when a fault is detected, perhaps car firms could issue a simple download to the vehicle remotely and save countless time, money and maybe even lives.Having the ability to remove the tablet whenever you leave the car could also spell the end of car stereo thieves.

The chance for a bit of cross-promotion probably doesn’t sound that unattractive to car companies and electronics giants either.

However, for all the potential benefits that these can offer, there are bound to be some drawbacks. As with any electronic device there is always the potential for glitches, which could be highly hazardous in some situations depending on the extent to with the tablet is engaged with the vehicle. Apps and entertainment features are also likely to lead to distraction for many drivers.

Also what would happen if the tablet was lost or broken? Does this mean the entire vehicle is out of action until a (probably very expensive) replacement can be ordered?

Only time will tell.

Really interesting article. And in fact I also can see and agree with you on the benefits that may come the use of tablets on cars. Nice work

Interesting perspective, the main concern I would have is the extra focus/effort fiddling with a touch screen requires versus just pushing a button? You can physically fumble for the button...

Aside from entertainment value when parked or queuing, or for a cinematic satnav experience, I don't see this going anywhere in the near future... like Jim Morrison said, "keep your eyes on the road, ...

That is so true. What's bad for normal drivers is funny for us. I'm looking forward to this.
