Toyota Auris Hybrid Wins Green Car of the Year Against European Rivals

won out among 1,015 online voters at “The Green Car Website” in the UK to win the Green Car of the Year 2013 award.

Not only is the Auris Hybrid a winner among the voters, it has also been a sales success. The hybrid is responsible for about 14% of Toyota’s overall sales in the UK

“This year is shaping up to be an exciting year for low emission vehicles, and the Toyota Auris Hybrid is a deserving winner of the Green Car of the Year title for 2013,” says the “The Green Car Website’s” editor, Faye Sunderland.

9. Opel/Vauxhall ADAM

The Adam opens the ranking with 4% of voters considering the small city car truly green. While small, the Adam is stylish and packed with technology. It is available with a 1.2 liter with 70hp, a 1.4 liter with 87hp and a 1.4 liter with 100hp. They all come with a five-speed manual transmission. All of the engines have an EcoFlex option that adds stop/start.

8. Mazda 6

Next-up on the list, also with 4% of votes, is the Mazda 6. The new generation debuts technologies such as i-Eloop regenerative braking and a new version of the Skyactiv-G engine and also has stop/start.

7. Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC

On seventh position, we have the Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC with 6% of voters saying that it is a green car. The 120 hp diesel engine gives the model a fuel economy of 3,7 and a top speed of 207 km/h.

6. Land Rover Range Rover Hybrid

The next model on the ranking has not yet reached the markets but is already enjoying great popularity with the public getting 7% of votes. The new generation Range Rover was announced to add a hybrid version to the line-up. However, more details on the hybrid SUV have not yet been announced - we are curious if it will fulfill the high expectations.

5. Ford Focus Electric

The Ford Focus Electric makes it to positionn five and attracts 10% of total votes. It has a large, on-board charger that allows it to be fully charged in four hours on a 240v outlet. The EV is powered by a 143hp and 184lb-ft of torque with a top speed of 135 kkm/h. It has a 23kWh Li-ion battery that is liquid cooled and heated. It is front-wheel drive with a a single-speed automatic transmission. 

4. Renault Zoe

The Zoe makes it to fourth position with 14% of votes. The electric car is available to the public with a decent range for a realistic price. Buyers have to lease the battery from Renault for €79 a month with a contract covering 12,500km per year for three years. It uses the Chameleon battery charging system that recharges the battery in nine hours.

3. BMW i3

The BMW i3 opens the top three of green cars in 2013 and managed to attract 17% of votes. The i3 is BMW's first attempt at selling a fully electric car that is available to the general public. It uses an electric motor mounted over the rear axle and produces 170hp. The small car will accelerate to 100km/h in less than eight seconds, according to BMW. 

2. Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion

The second greenest car, according to the visitors of TheGreenCarWebsite, ist the Golf BlueMotion, that gets 17% of votes. The new generation of this compact bestseller is 100kg lighter than the outgoing model and gets 23% fuel economy. The cleanest BlueMotion model uses just 3.2l/100km of fuel and emits 85g/km of CO2.

1. Toyota Auris Hybrid

Once again, Toyota demonstrates leadership when it comes to green technology and takes the "Green Car 2013" Trophy with 21% of total votes for the Auris Hybrid. The hybrid has 126l more cargo space over the previous generation, due to an improved hybrid system. Toyota also reduced the coefficient of drag to Cd0.28, which is an improvement of 0.01.
