Toyota Releases Teaser of FT-86: A Sportscar Meant for Everyone

It is looking ever more likely that Toyota will finally unveil the production version of its FT-86 sports coupe. Toyota released a teaser video showing the car being painted and prepped for the Frankfurt Auto Show. The end of the video hints that the car will debut during Toyota's press conference on September 13.

The FT-86 has been under joint development between Toyota and Subaru since at least 2009. The Subaru version called the BRZ will also debut at Frankfurt. The sports coupe will seat either four or five people. It is powered by a 2.0 liter, naturally-aspirated flat-four engine from Subaru and, at least in the concept, a six-speed manual transmission from Subaru. Toyota worked on most of the chassis tuning. Styling will be different between the two companies' versions of the car. The Toyota version will likely be rear-wheel drive, while the Subaru version will be all-wheel drive.

Originally, the FT-86 was meant to sell for around $20,000 but there has been speculation that the car will actually cost a little more than that. The other speculation about the car is that it will sold in the US as a Scion, not a Toyota.

I can't wait to see how this works. If it does then they might make the Supra, if it doesn't then Toyota fails it's a win win.

I think Vetteman is right. When this car gets enough power and they aim at a $ 20,000 price tag, I think this gorgeous it can become quite a succes.

And if it's a success more types of these cars will be born and a new wave of affordable sports cars will thrive!
