The Toyota Prius C went on sale on March 12 in the US, and it has already sold 9,821 examples, which is about three times as many cars as Nissan and Chevrolet have sold Leafs and Volts in the entire year combined.
“A number of factors drive the auto market, and fuel prices is one of them. With 53 miles-per-gallon in the city and priced under $19,000, the timing for Prius c couldn’t be better,” said Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager of the Toyota Division.
Nissan has sold 1,154 Leafs in January and February of this year - it has not revealed it sales for March yet. Chevrolet has sold 1,626 Volts in the same time period.
The Prius C has a base price of $18,950 in the US and can top of the range models cost $23,250. It is powered by a 73hp, 1.5 liter Atkinson cycle engine that is mated to a 60hp electric motor for a total system output of 99hp. It is rated at 53mpg city and 46mpg highway making it the most efficient non-plug-in hybrid car in the US.
