Clean Turbo Diesel to the North American market at the Chicago Auto Show. It will use a 2.0l turbocharged diesel engine in the Cruze sedan.
Chevrolet claims that the engine will produce 148hp and 258lb-ft of torque and have highway fuel economy of 42mpg. It takes 8.6 seconds to get to 60mph. All cars in North America will get a six-speed automatic, 17in wheels, low-rolling resistance tires, the Aero Performance Package and leather seats. That is the same fuel economy but more power than the Jetta diesel that the Cruze will be competing directly against.
Prices for the Cruze diesel will start at $25,695, plus a $810 destination fee. The cars will get a five-year/100,000 mile warranty.
Diesel passenger cars have been on a slow but steady march towards popularity in the US. They are not nearly as popular as hybrids, but with new diesels coming from Jeep, Audi and now Chevrolet, they appear to be growing in popularity.
“Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel is the most sophisticated passenger car diesel engine GM has ever produced. We merged European diesel expertise with the real world driving preferences of North American consumers," said said Jens Wartha, chief engineer for the Cruze’s diesel engine.
