VW has won the last the Dakar rally for the last three years in a row, and it looks like that might be enough for it. The driver of the Dakar-prepped Touareg, Nasser Al-Attiyah, is moving to VW's World Rally team next year and is not interested in competing without the guys from Wolfsburg.
"It doesn't look so possible now. I won't go there without my engineer and the same team. This is not sensible and I don't think we will be able to do it. It's a great shame, I really wanted to defend my title,” said Al-Attiyah.
An unnamed source told Autosport that VW is realizing that its forthcoming WRC effort is a major undertaking, and the team does not have the time to prepare a truck for Dakar this year and a competitive WRC car.
