Webber Describes Driving a Modern F1 Car as 'Frustrating'

Formula 1 might have to get slower to get more interesting

Webber says that driving a car today is frustrating because the driver waits behind a car for most of the race

Mark Webber is among the most experienced drivers currently in the Formula 1 paddock. He began his F1 career in 2002, so when he says F1 rules may need to be rethought, people should at least consider what he says. Webber says that the lack of excitement in modern F1 may indicate that the rules need changed. Formula 1 may have to get slower to get more interesting.

"You ask any F1 driver, yes it's frustrating to sit behind a car for a full grand prix distance. I've been there, a lot of guys have been there, and that's not much fun.

"But also my race in Shanghai 2011: I'm arriving on guys like Fernando and Lewis, I'm creaming through them at about 2.5s per lap because I'd saved tires from qualifying. That's not right either," said Webber.

Webber's solution is to slow down the cars slightly to improve on-track action.

"We have to drop down a little bit to more of the racing side of things.

"Fernando passing Kimi for the lead of the Spanish Grand Prix wasn't much of an event; Sebastian and Fernando racing each other in Shanghai wasn't either," said Webber.

He did not go into detail about how exactly to make the racing more exciting. The engines are not going to change any time soon because that formula is already set, but the aerodynamics could be reduced to force the cars to slide around more. The tires could also be changed to provide longer life but with less grip.

He says that it is also harming young drivers in F1 because they are more focused on saving tires than showing their performance.

"Young drivers now are not getting the chance to show what they are capable of doing, which is the absolute basics.

"We need to find young drivers pushing the car and themselves to the absolute limits, consistently having a strong baseline. That's important," he said.
