The Corsa was first introduced in April 1982 and replaced the Opel Kadett C City. The first Corsas were available as three-door hatchback and two-door saloon models, with four-door and five-door versions arriving in 1984. The basic model became known as just Corsa, other versions such as the Corsa Luxus, Corsa Berlina and the Corsa SR followed. In 1989, the Corsa received a facelift, which resulted in a new front design and some other minor changes. The new models were labelled LS, GL, GLS and GT.
The first generation Corsa was offered with 1.0 L 45 hp, 1.2 L 55 hp, 1.3 L 70 hp and 1.4 L 75 hp petroleum engines. There was also a 1.5 L diesel engine available. The engines and most of the mechanical components were based on those of the Opel Astra and Kadett. In 1990 the Corsa's design was updated with new bumpers, headlights, grille and interior.

Opel entered the automobile business in 1899, selling Opel-Lutzmann cars, the first of them being the “Patent Motor Car”. Partnership between Opel and Lutzman was terminated in 1901 and Adam Opel’s son initiated a new contract with the French carmaker Darracq that allowed the German company to built Opel-Darracq cars. These cars received their chassis from Darracq and their bodies from Opel.
