In the summer of 1987 came the  405. The model was a pioneer in Peugeot's portfolio, exchanging rear- for front-wheel drive. The transversally mounted engine helped enhance the interior space. Other innovations are the turbo-diesel engines, new petrol engines, two different 4-wheel-drive systems. In 1988, the mid-engine Sportcoupé 405 Turbo 16 wins the Pikes-Peak hillclimb and the Paris-Dakar Rally.
