D. Napier & Son Limited was founded by David Napier and his son James in London, England, in 1848. The company dedicated to the manufacture of a wide range of machinery. In 1895 David’s grandson, Montague Napier took over the business after his father’s death and started designing and building engines. The Company soon embarked in car building and became known for their high quality vehicles (passenger cars, trucks, ambulances and army vehicles) and engines. Napiers’ were the first automobiles to be equipped with a 6 cylinder engine. Car production was discontinued in 1925. Napier was taken over by English Electric in 1942.
