Samsung Motors was founded by Kun Hee Lee, president of the Samsung Group, in Seoul, South Korea, in 1994. Following the Asian financial crisis that emerged in 1997 Samsung Motors encountered serious difficulties and in September 2000 sold a major participation to Renault. The company was then reorganized under the name Renault Samsung Motors Corp (RSM). The first Samsung cars were based on Nissan’s technology. After the partnership with Renault car production became Renault’s technology based.
