The Scion FR-S is a compact rear-wheel drive high-performance coupe, unveiled by the American brand in Los Angeles in 2011.
According to Scion, the FR-S name stands for Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport and this is expected to express the brand’s definition of an authentic rear-wheel-drive sports car with balanced performance and handling, attractive design, flexible utility and surprising fuel consumption.
The FR-S has been inspired on the AE86 generation of the Corolla and while developing it engineers and designers have worked on the goal of achieving “Pure Balance”. This is achieved with the use of the world’s only flat boxer engine in a front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration.
The 2.0-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine featured on the FR-S was developed together with Toyota and Subaru. It all starts by bringing together Subaru’s newly developed horizontally opposed engine and Toyota’s D-4S injection system that incorporates both direct and port injection.
With a 200hp of output and 205Nm of torque the flat-four can be combined with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
Through the lightweight design and compact size of the FR-S, Scion also manages to achieve the idea of “Pure Balance”. This allows the sports coupe to be quick and nimble into and out of corners, with dynamic maneuverability and confident handling.
