The Peugeot 404 came in 1960 and was, as its predecessor, designed by Pininfarina. It was sold as sedan, estate, pick-up and convertible and two engine options were available. The model was also commonly used as taxi and had a reputation for its reliability. By 1975, Peugeot had manufactured 1,847,568 units in France alone. By 1988, another  2,885,374 units had been produced under license abroad.
