General Characteristics

In 2003, Rolls-Royce unveiled a totally new Phantom at the company’s headquarters and manufacturing facility in Goodwood, West Sussex, United Kingdom. The Rolls-Royce Phantom is a full-size luxury sedan that is still currently being produced in the U.K. It is reported that the conception of this car was guided by one of the mottos that the company’s co-founder Sir Henry Royce used to pronounce: “Strive for perfection in everything you do”.

History and Development

Launched in 2003, the new Rolls-Royce Phantom was given some of the most sophisticated features, both in engineering and aesthetics, with radically advanced technology and the highest levels of hand-build quality.   As Rolls-Royce’s current parent company, BMW supplies 15% of the Phantom’s parts and components. This model is currently in active production.

Body and Design

Designers Marek Djordjevic and Ian Cameron styled the 4-door sedan Phantom. The brand claims that the Rolls-Royce models Phantom I and II that were produced in 1930’s were great inspirations for the 2003 Phantom’s styling, as well as the 1950’s Silver Cloud and the 1960’s Silver Shadow models.   The Phantom has rear-hinged rear doors, which Rolls-Royce refers to as ‘coach doors’ but are also commonly called ‘suicide doors’. The company keeps up with the ancient tradition of handmade work, having only two paint robots for colouring these cars.
