Model history

1988, Volkswagen delivers the third generation of the Passat and Passat Estate to dealerships. It exhibits new qualities, has grown significantly larger and comes with completely new styling lines, has a considerably longer wheelbase and has switched over to transverse mounted engines. Once again, Volkswagen presents the Estate in parallel.

In 1990, the Passat exceeds the five million units production mark. Another highlight: the VR6 introduced in early summer 1991. From 2.8 litres of displacement, the compact six cylinder develops 128 kW / 174 PS; the top speed of the Passat VR6 saloon is 224 km/h, while the Estate reaches 218 km/h.
