History and Development

The Porsche 911 generation that was produced from 1989 to 1993 is the 964 series, which lets one know that some major developments were made, whether mechanically or in its body design. The first variant from this series was a 4-wheel drive model, the Carrera 4. But just a year went on and the Carrera 2, i.e. the rear-wheel drive version, was launched too.   In addition, some Turbo variants were also added to the lineup. The 964 series were the first 911 cars that could be chosen in all-wheel drive and Tiptronic automatic transmission options. When production of the 964 series Porsche ended, over 62.000 had been manufactured.

Engine and Transmission

Most 964 variants came with a 3.6L rear-mounted M64 engine, except for two of the Turbo variants that were powered by a 3.3L engine. In terms of wheel drive, these 911 models could come in all-wheel or in rear-wheel drive.   The 964 series comes with a power output between 247 and 260 hp within the Carrera variants, and between 320 and 360 hp for the Turbos. Top speed from the most powerful variant was achieved at 163 mi/h (261 km/h) and transmissions came in standard 5-speed manual or with an optional 4-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox.

Body and Design

In comparison with the previous 911 generations, the 964 series is much more evolved because its body styling suffered some major design developments, even though it continues to be very similar to its predecessors. Body types available for the Porsche 911 customers to opt from were the coupé, the convertible and the Targa versions, all in 2-door bodies.
