Review

Ford Fiesta's sixth generation was first presented at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show and it is based on Ford's B-car platform. The new generation was first marketed in Europe, Australia and the United States but in 2011 sales began for Canada, Mexico and India.

Engines and Performance

Petrol engines

Ford Fiesta has a line-up of four petrol engines which include: two 1.25l Duratec with a power output of 60 and 82hp and 109 and 114Nm of torque respectively; one 1.4l Duractec with 96hp and 128Nm of torque and one 1.6l Duratec Ti-VCT with 120hp and 152Nm of maximum torque.

Diesel engines

Fiesta's line-up of diesel engines includes one 1.4l Duratorq TDCi engine with a power output of 68hp and 160Nm of torque, two 1.6l Duratorq TDCi with 75 and 90hp of power output and 185 and 212Nm of torque, respectively. Finally there is also a 1.6l Duratorq ECOnetic engine that delivers up to 90hp and 200Nm of torque.

ECOnetic

The ECOnetic model was first introduced in 2009 in an effort from Ford to reduce CO2 emissions. The model uses a 1.6 Duratorq TDCi diesel engine with an extra diesel particulate filter and achieved an estimate fuel consumption of 3.6l/100km, actually performing better than the Toyota Prius.

Special versions

Fiesta ST

The 2011 Ford Fiesta ST sports a turbocharged, 1.6 liter Ecoboost engine making 177hp and 240Nm of torque.

The Fiesta ST is truly a smaller version of the Focus ST. Its 1.6 liter, Ecoboost engine is based off 2.0 liter found in the Focus ST. Ford claims that it will be capable of sprints to 100km/h in less than seven seconds with a six-speed manual transmission and a top speed of about 220km/h. Ford claims that the Fiesta ST will produce less than 140g/km of CO2.

The design of the Fiesta ST is probably what is most polarizing. It is very aggressive with a rear diffuser, 17in wheels and dual exhaust. The front end is very love it or hate it, though. While the large, single piece frontend looks great on the Focus ST, it is almost too big on the Fiesta ST. The car is almost starting to look fish-like. It is definitely functional but might not be aesthetically good.

Body and Trims

Ford Fiesta is a model sold in various countries in different body types. The 5-door hatchback is sold worldwide except for India, the 4-door sedan was originally available in China and the USA and became later available in parts of Asia and Australasia. The 3-door hatchback is marketed in Europe, Australasia and parts of Asia. The 2-door van is exclusively sold in Europe.

Different trims levels are also offered in different countries, for the UK Fiesta is sold in various trims such as Studio, Style, Edge, Zetec, Edge ECOnetic, Titanium, Zetec S, Zetec ECOnetic, Metal and Titanium ECOnetic.

In the United States Fiesta is available as S Sedan, SE Sedan, SE Hatch, SEL Sedan and SES Hatch.

Awards

Fiesta is a popular model and it has earned Ford a few awards: Car of the Year 2009 by What Car? magazine, Car of the Year and Best Supermini in Auto Express magazine's New Car Awards of 2009, Least Boring Green Car awarded to the Fiesta ECOnetic in 2009 by Top Gear's James May and the 2011 AJAC Car of the Year award for Best Small Car under $21,000.
