Review

Jaguar finally revealed the 2013 F-Type including all of its technical specs at the Paris Motor Show 2012.

The F-Type is sold in three trim levels: F-Type, F-Type S and F-Type V8 S. The standard car gets a 340ps supercharged, 3.0-liter V6, the F-Type S has a 380ps tune of the same engine and the F-Type V8 S uses a new 495ps tune of Jaguar's 5.0-liter turbocharged V8. All versions come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and stop/start. The S and V8 S both have an exhaust system with a valve the opens above 3,000rpm to make the car louder. The V8 S has standard launch control. The V6 models have a dual, center-mounted exhaust, while the V8s get dual exhausts on either side.

The standard engine gets the car to 100km/h in 5.3 seconds with 209g/km of CO2 emissions. The 380ps version takes 4.9 seconds with 213g/km of CO2 emissions, and the V8 takes 4.3 seconds with 259g/km of CO2 emissions.

The F-Type is made entirely from aluminum for its construction. The monocoque, front sub-frame and front and rear suspension are all aluminum units. This keeps the car's weight down to 1597kg. For competent handling, Jaguar gave the car front and rear double wishbone suspension. The driver sits 20mm lower in the F-Type than in an XKR-S.

All models also get bi-xenon headlights with LED running lights and LED taillights. There is also an active rear spoiler that deploys at higher speeds. The air vents in the cabin deploy from the center of the dashboard when the driver activates the fan.

To keep weight down, the car has a fabric convertible top that raises and lowers in 12 seconds at up to 30mph.

The F-Type will go on sale in the middle of 2013. Jaguar has not announced pricing yet.

Coupé Variant

The F-Type Coupe has a body and chassis made from aluminum, and Jaguar claims that it is the most torsionally rigid Jaguar ever made. The top F-Type R Coupe has 543hp (550ps) and 502lb-ft of torque (680Nm) with a 5.0-liter V8 supercharged engine. The R Coupe gets to 60mph in 4.0 seconds and has a limited top speed of 186mph.

The roof of the coupe is mostly glass supported with aluminum. The entire panel above the driver’s head is glass, and the rear glass extends up most of the back of the car. Other than an aluminum narrow panel where the rear glass and roof glass meet, the most of the added roof is glass. It is also available with a solid metal roof.

The F-Type Coupe offers 407-liters of rear cargo space and has been designed to accept to sets of golf clubs. There is also an automated rear spoiler that extends above 70mph and lowers below 50mph.

The R Coupe also introduces a second-generation electronic differential with torque vectoring to the F-Type. The differential distributes power left and right at the rear wheels, and the torque vectoring brakes the rear wheels during cornering to maintain traction.

The F-Type R is available with adaptive dampers with multiple modes.

The car is also available as the F-Type S Coupe with a 375hp (380ps) or F-Type Coupe with 335hp (340ps) versions of the 3.0-liter supercharged V6. It is enough to get the 375hp to 60mph in 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 171mph or the 335hp version in 5.1 seconds with a top speed of 161mph.

All of the engines come with an eight-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddles.

The F-Type R and F-Type S are both available with optional carbon ceramic matrix brakes that save 21kg over the standard car.
