BMW decided to double its nameplates with odd numbers for sedans and even numbers for coupes, ignoring the 6 Series Gran Coupe that is, by saying that it plans to further differentiate the style of its cars, and the best way to do that is creating new model lines. The 4 Series is the first of these new even-numbered BMWs to arrive.
The 4 Series Coupe shares its platform with the F30 3 Series, but it gets new sheet metal from nearly every angle. Compared to the previous-generation 3 Series Coupe, the 4 Series is also wider, has a longer wheelbase and lower ride.
The 4 Series takes its design inspiration from BMW’s brand style. It has short overhangs and a long hood with the passenger compartment sent towards the rear. From straight on, the 4 Series and 3 Series are nearly identical. It set off its style, the 4 Series has cooling vents behind the front wheels, and the rear gets more aggressive, extended wheel arches.
Compared to the 3 Series, the 4 Series also has more direct steering and the lowest center of gravity of any BMW currently on sale.
At launch the 4 Series is available with as the six-cylinder 435i, four-cylinder petrol 428i or four-cylinder diesel 420d. All of them come standard with a six-speed manual transmission or an optional eight-speed automatic. They also all come with start/stop, brake energy regeneration and with the automatic transmission a coasting mode. The 435i and 428i are optionally available with all-wheel drive.
The 4 Series is offered in four trim packages – Sport Line, Modern Line, Luxury Line and M Sport. Normal BMW options like navigation, head-up display and active cruise control are also available.
The cars go on sale in the late summer 2013.

In the beginning of 2014 BMW presented the 4 Series Gran Coupé, the first four-door coupé in the premium midsize class. Following the launch of the BMW 4 Series Coupé and Convertible, the Gran Coupé is the third variant to join the new BMW 4 Series. The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé combines the sleek look of a two-door coupé with the functionality provided by four-doors and expansive spaciousness, including a wide-access luggage compartment.
Design
The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé has exactly the same dimensions as the two-door coupé (4638 millimeters long, 1825 millimeters wide and a wheelbase of 2810 millimeters). Up front, both models are identical and share the typical BMW design features like the double-kidney grille, dual round headlights and the large air intake in the front apron. However, the roof of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is twelve millimeters higher, 112 mm longer stretching into the rear quarter panels and boot lid. The typical BMW short overhangs, the long bonnet and the set-back passenger compartment complement the design of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé.
Finally the boot volume of 480 liters is 35 liters larger than that of the two-door version for more convenience in meeting the challenges of everyday driving situations.
Engines and transmissions
The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé offers a choice of five powerful and efficient engines. Topping the petrol range is the 435i’s six-cylinder in-line 3.0-liter petrol engine which delivers 306hp, with a combined fuel consumption 8.1l/100 km and 189g/km of CO2 emissions. The BMW 428i Gran Coupé (fuel consumption 6.6l/100km and combined CO2 emissions of 154g/km)and the BMW 420i Gran Coupé (fuel consumption combined 6.4 l/100km and combined CO2 emissions of 149g/km) complete the petrol range with four-cylinder engines that deliver 245hp and 184hp, respectively.
In the diesel range the 4 Series Gran Coupé is offered in two different versions. The 420d Gran Coupé with 184hp offers a combined consumption of 4.7l/100km and combined CO2 emission of 124g/km. Average fuel consumption varies with tires, between 4.7 to 4.9liters per 100kilometers (4.6 to 4.7 liters with sport automatic transmission) and this version sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7seconds (7.5 seconds with sport automatic transmission).
The engine in the BMW 418d Gran Coupé has an output of 143hp and consumes 4.5 to 4.7 liters per 100 kilometers. It has a combined fuel consumption of 4.5l/100 km and combined CO2 emissions of 119g/km.
All diesel and petrol engines feature the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and comply with the EU6 emissions standard.
At model launch, the 428i Gran Coupé and the 420d Gran Coupé can be optionally equipped with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive technology. The standard variant of the new 4 Series Gran Coupé features a six-speed manual transmission, but all engines can be combined with the optional eight-speed Steptronic or eight-speed sport Steptronic transmissions, which also feature manual shifting using paddles on the steering wheel.

BMW
Since its first steps on vehicle building, BMW has committed itself to advanced technology and constant improvement. The Germany-based pioneers were the experienced aviator Gustav Otto and the owner of Rapp Motorenwerke (an aircraft engine factory), Karl Rapp. These men combined efforts in order to start a real aircraft industry, placed in Munich, which would serve the German military during the First World War by providing them the airplanes. So, in 1913,... more
