History, development and general characteristics

The second generation Subaru Impreza, also nicknamed ‘New Age’ Impreza, was internationally released on the markets in 2001.
The Impreza received a handful of improvements that were supposed to increase the car’s safety, stiffness and refinement. A larger size and a quicker reaction to the driver’s commands were also on the table for the 2nd series Impreza. On the other hand, the first series Impreza fans were quite disappointed with the new car’s increased weight and lowered speed.
The Subaru Impreza II was offered in a few variants, such as the WRX, WRX STi and 2.5RS Imprezas.

Engine and Transmission

The 2nd Impreza model is powered by flat-4 (boxer) front engines and a four-wheel drive system.
Naturally aspirated engines offered are a 2.0-liter unit with 125 hp and a 2.5-liter that started off with 165 hp and was increased in 2005 to 173 hp.
2.0- and 2.5-liter turbocharged engines with 227 hp were offered since 2002. A 2.5-liter engine with turbo and 300 hp was introduced in 2004, allowing the car to achieve around 155 mi/h (250 km/h) and go from 0-60 mi/h (0-97 km/h) in 5.1 seconds.
In Subaru’s domestic market, Japan, this Impreza was offered with 1.5-liter engines, while 1.6-liter units were available in several Asian countries such as Singapore.
4-speed automatic, 5-speed manual and 6-speed manual transmissions were integrated into the different versions of the 2nd series Impreza.

Body and Engine

The ‘new age’ Imprezas are offered as 4-door sedans and 5-door station wagons.
This model underwent a significant styling facelift in 2003 as a consequence of the tough critics that the car suffered from both the consumers and the specialized press. The Impreza then became somewhat more conservative and was given squarer headlamps.
This model was restyled once more in 2006, being given a new grille design, a new bumper and new front and rear lights.
