Built since 1989, the Subaru Legacy is a mid-size model from the Japanese brand available in the sedan and estate body styles. The Subaru Legacy is the flagship model of Subaru.

The Legacy was developed with the goal of providing Subaru with a model with which they could compete in the lucrative North American midsize market against competitors Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. The Higher performance variants of the Legacy were also offered as competitive alternatives to compact executive cars such as the Audi A4, Alfa Romeo 159 and BMW 3 Series.

The Subaru Legacy is unique in its class for offering all wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine.

In 2008 Subaru reached the mark of 3.6 million Legacies built since the car's introduction in 1989.
