History

Tesla was born in Silicon Valley by the hand of Martin Eberhard, Marc Tarpenning in 2003. The engineers got financial support from the PayPal founder Elon Musk that later gathered a series of investments from prominent figures on new technologies, like the Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page and former eBay president Jeff Skoll among others. Tesla was named after the electrical engineer and physicist Nikola Tesla, the inventor of alternating current.

Since its birth, Tesla Motors had a few changes in its board. In 2007, Michael Marks, as an interim CEO replaced Martin Eberhard. Later that year, Ze’ev Drori was nominated as the permanent CEO, firing 10% of the Tesla workforce in the following year, to try to control the costs of production of the company. Still in 2008, Elon Musk became the CEO, leaving Drori the vice-chairman position.
