Whether we are driving nuts or simply inveterate tourists who do not lose the opportunity to leave home to drive for miles in our car there are roads that over the years have become real "meccas" for those who enjoy a good road trip.

Some got famous for their extension, others have become synonymous of adventure, while others lead us to some of the most beautiful places in the world where every kilometer is simply breathtaking.

We have collected ten roads that we believe embody this spirit and ensure that you should not lose the opportunity to drive them if you're close to them.

Atlantic Ocean Road, Norway

The Atlantic Ocean Road is a section of County Road 64 with 8.3 kilometers which runs through an archipelago in Eide and Averøy in Møre og Romsdal, Norway. The road runs between the villages of Kårvåg on Averøy and Vevang in Eida and is built on several small islands and skerries, which are connected by several causeways, viaducts and eight bridges, the most prominent being Storseisundet Bridge.

Panamericana, Canada-Argentina

Panamericana is one of the most famous network of roads in the world with about 48,000 kilometres, connecting Prudhoe Harbour, Canada, to Ushuaia, Argentina. Except for a rainforest break of about 160 km the road links the mainland nations of the Americas in a linked highway system. According to Guinness the Panamericana is the world's longest "motorable road".

Great Ocean Road, Australia

Meandering along the coast, with tall, almost-vertical cliffs on the other side of it the Great Ocean Road is an Australian National Heritage that stretches throughout 243 kilometres along the south-eastern coast of Australia between the Victorian cities of Torquay and Allansford. Built by returned soldiers between 1919 and 1932 the road is the world's largest war memorial.

Route 66, USA

Route 66 is one of the most famous highways in the world. It was one of the first highways within the U.S. Highway System, being established in 1926. It originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before ending at Santa Monica, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles. It was officially removed from the United States Highway System on June 27, 1985

Interstate 70, USA

I-70 runs from I-15 near Cove Fort, Utah, to a Park and Ride near Baltimore, Maryland and was the first Interstate Highway project in the US. Its stretch in Colorado and Utah is considered an engineering marvel as the route passes through the Eisenhower Tunnel, Glenwood Canyon, and the San Rafael Swell. The Eisenhower Tunnel is the highest point along the Interstate Highway system at 3,401m.

Oberalp Pass, Switzerland

The twists and turns of Oberalp Pass are only open to traffic in the summer. It is located high up in the Swiss Alps, where it connects the resort town of Aldermatt with the nearby Surselva region of Graubünden. 2044m above sea level, the road also is home to the world's highest lighthouse, which opened in 2010. Imagine yourself driving a cabriolet and singing an lay-od-lay-od-lay-he-hoo song!

Jebel Hafeet Road, UAE

Called one of the world's greatest driving road this road is located in the arid landscape Abu Dhabi, near the city of Al Ain. The road rises some 4,000 feet between Green Mubazarrah up to Jebel Hafeet mountain peak. The road's steep 8% incline, together with it's outline following the shape of the mountains, make it an exciting place to drive, and you can imagine the sheiks having fun with their millionaire cars.

Milford Road, New Zealand

Making part of State Highway 94 in New Zealand Milford Road is a section of 119km that goes from Te Anau up to the Milford Sound, region where Lord of the Rings Triology was shot. It is regarded as one of the most scenic roads in New Zealand, and with a peak elevation of 940m, also one of the country's highest. It's breath-taking landscapes make it a must drive to on your roadbook.

Karakoram Highway, Pakistan/China

The Karakoram Highway (KKH) is the highest paved international road in the world. It connects China and Pakistan across the Karakoram mountain range, through the Khunjerab Pass, at 4,693 metres. Due to its high elevation and difficult conditions in which it was constructed, it is referred as the "Eighth Wonder of the World."

Heaven-Linking Avenue, China

Heaven-Linking Avenue is a serpentine road in Tianmen Mountain that starts at 200 meters below sea land reaching 1300 meters above sea level along a total of 99 hair-pin turns. In Chinese culture, 9 is considered a lucky number and so a road with 99 turns symbolizes heaven, and hence the term Heaven-Linking Avenue. It was built between 1998 and 2006.
