have created a technological concept called the Fiesta e-Wheel DriveFiesta eWheelDriveFord Fiesta eWheelDriveUnited States of America, 2013 > present that uses hub-mounted electric motors in each rear wheel. It will be on display at the Auto, Motor und Sport Congress in Stuttgart.

The electric motor, electronics, controller, brakes and liquid cooling system are installed in the wheel hub, and it requires wheels 16in or larger to fit. The batteries are stored under the hood where the batteries would usually be. Each unit produces a peak of 54hp or a constant 44hp and a total of 516lb-ft of torque. Each hub weighs 53kg (117lb), but Schaeffler estimates that a conventional wheel bearing and brake would weigh 45kg (99lb).

"The wheel hub drive makes previously unheard-of space savings possible. In these new vehicle concepts, all components that are relevant for propulsion, braking, and driving safety are housed inside the wheel. The vehicle platform therefore provides maximum space for passengers, luggage, and for the battery, electronics, and communication systems. And vehicle manufacturers can use this as a basis for a range of different body designs," said Professor Peter Gutzmer, member of Schaeffler's executive board.

Ford took the test car to Scandinavia to test how the system would work in cold climates. In theory automakers could use the hubs turn the wheels 90 degrees to parallel park horizontally.

Schaeffler previously experimented with an earlier version of the technology on an Opel CorsaCorsa Gen.4 [D]Opel Corsa Gen.4 [D]Germany, 2006 > present222 versions

I agree with Ammestones. Like a metropolitan, Tokyo, Hong Kong, New York, parking space is limited. Due to the feature by turning wheels in 90 degrees horizontally, it could let the car park even the ...
