. The German manufacturer announced that it will present a new i8 Spyder concept at the 2016 edition of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January.

 

Apparently the new i8 Spyder concept may be very close to a final production version. The first concept was presented in 2012 at the Beijing Motor Show but BMW has since then faced several problems in its development over the past four years.

 

One of the major problems faced by BMW during the development of the Spyder version of the electric supercar was to incorporate the construction of the reinforced carbon fiber plastic panels of the i8 into the convertible format.

 

The problems seem to have been finally been overcome and BMW will launch the new i8 Spyder over the next 12 months.

 

Taking into account that the CES is an event focused on technology, the concept should have a greater focus on technology that can be found in the production version of the i8 Spyder. It is expected to come together with the announcement of improvements in terms of connectivity, security systems and even in powertrain and batteries. The range of the vehicle should exceed the 37km of the coupé variant.

 

As the i8 Coupé, the Spyder version will also be equipped with a 1.5-litre three cylinder petrol engine placed in the rear of the vehicle. Together with the front electric motor, the i8 Spyder has a combined power of 230hp.
