Nissan and Dongfeng Negotiating to Build EV Factory in China

and Chinese joint venture partner Dongfeng are negotiating to build an electric car factory in China that would cost around $322 million, according to China’s National Development and Reform Commission’s Guangdong branch.

by the end of the year. By 2015, production would reach 50,000 cars.

If built, the factory would give some support to China’s attempt to sell 5 million electric cars in the country by 2020. So far EVs and hybrids has struggled to catch on in China.

Nissan hopes to have 10% of its sales be from EVs by 2020, but it has also had problems finding customers at those levels.

The Guangdong provincial government where the factory would be built published a report stating an interest to having a capacity of 200,000 alternative-fuel vehicles by 2015.
