Opel has announced that it will launch in 2017 a new electric model with batteries: the
Ampera-e. The German brand promises that the model will be revolutionary and will have a greater range than most of the current electric vehicles and will be sold at a more affordable price.
The new Ampera-e combines innovative technology in terms of the electric engine with high connectivity and sharpened dynamics based on the experience gathered since 2011 with the first
Ampera. The model is part of a comprehensive renewal of the range of Opel products that will bring 29 new models to the market between 2016 and 2020.
The new Ampera-e was presented by the Chairman and CEO of General Motors, Mary Barra, at the CAR Symposium held in Bochum, Germany. At the time Barra said the "new electric car with batteries further demonstrates the reputation of Opel as a manufacturer that makes innovative engineering widely available."
To develop the Ampera-e, Opel concerned with urbanity but also with environmental protection, investing in new mobility solutions and alternative powertrain systems. The CEO of Opel Karl-Thomas Neumann said that the "new Ampera-e will open a new path in electric mobility, to take down old barriers like high prices and little range."
The particularly compact Opel Ampera-e features a flat battery unit placed under the cabin floor. This feature allows it to offer a cabin with room to comfortably sit five people and a luggage compartment with a capacity similar to a model of the compact segment, such as the
Astra.
