F1 boss Cyril Abiteboul has the crazy idea that there needs to be cooperation between teams in Formula 1 on the 2014 chassis when the 1.6-liter turbo V6s are introduced.
"Potentially this breakthrough will require some partnership between the teams, and that is not only for teams like us," said Abiteboul.
Abiteboul is advocating that teams take inspiration from road cars and work together to develop a common chassis that they can then further modify.
"You want to be more efficient, you want to be more competitive - and therefore you work in collaboration.
"I think the same thing that will have to happen in F1," he said.
In reality, this is something that could only work for teams in the lower portion of the grid. It is impossible to see Adrian Newey or Ferrari willing to give their knowledge to other teams. It just is not going to happen. Perhaps more realistic would be if Marussia and Caterham pooled their resources to develop more competitve cars.
"It is a bit new to F1, because the teams also have to compete against each on the track, but I think the future will be about collaboration - and 2014 will urge us into considering more collaboration," he said.
Abiteboul will not go far enough to push this idea towards customer cars, even though this is the idea's logical progression.
"There is a limit and in particular we don't want customer cars.
"But between no collaboration at all and customer cars, there is a compromise to be found," he said.
