McLaren Boss Predicts USGP Will Improve Popularity

The track hosts its first race this weekend

Not counting the 11 times that the Indianapolis 500 was technically counted as part of the Formula 1 World Championship, there have been 51 F1 races in the United States. But the sport still struggles to gain popularity in the US. McLarenMcLarenMcLarenUnited Kingdom, 1963 > present92 models

team boss and CEO Martin Whitmarsh predicts Formula 1's current unpredictability of DRS and Pirelli tires could lead to a very interesting race and increase American interest.

"North American sport focuses significantly on entertainment, and Formula 1 over the years has probably not placed enough emphasis on that," said Whitmarsh.

Formula 1 is very different than when it was last in the US in 2007. It was the year that Kimi Raikkonen won the championship. There was no DRS or KERS at the time, and there was still refueling. It was the first year that there was one tire maker, which was Bridgestone at the time.

"Formula 1 is much more unpredictable and, as a consequence, much more entertaining than it was only a couple of years ago," he said.

The United States Grand Prix was last held in the US in 2007 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Circuit of the Americas is the tenth track in the US to host a F1 Grand Prix in the US, and it is the sixth track to host a race called the USGP.

"We need North America more than it needs us, and therefore we've got to be prepared to work at it, adapt the sport if necessary but make sure we do everything we can so we can appeal to the American market," he said.

This might be the perfect year to bring Formula 1 back to the US. There is a real points battle at the race, and it could decide the championship.
